How to Trade Solana Memecoins
Step-by-step: fund a wallet, evaluate a token, place a trade, set take-profit/stop-loss and manage risk.

Trading a Solana memecoin comes down to five steps: fund a wallet with SOL, evaluate the token honestly, size a position you can afford to lose, place the buy with sensible slippage and priority settings, then set your exits before emotion takes over. This guide walks through each step and the risks at every stage.

Before you start
Memecoins are among the most volatile assets in crypto. Many go to zero. The only money you should use is money you are fully prepared to lose. You will need SOL to trade and to pay Solana network fees, and an interface to trade through, this guide uses Cheetah, which runs as a Telegram bot and iOS/Android app, as the example.
Step-by-step
Fund a wallet with SOL
Deposit SOL into your trading wallet. On Cheetah this is an embedded wallet with encrypted keys that you can withdraw from at any time (this is not seed-phrase self-custody). Keep some SOL spare for network and priority fees.
Find a candidate token
Use a screener or discovery feed to surface trending tokens, or follow a tracked wallet’s buys. See how to track Solana wallets for finding activity worth watching.
Evaluate it before buying
Check liquidity, holder concentration, mint authority and whether it might be a honeypot. Cheetah’s it runs rug/liquidity checks, but do your own too , see how to identify memecoin scams.
Size the position
Decide the fixed SOL amount you will risk before you open the trade. Never size a memecoin position as if it will survive, assume it could go to zero.
Place the buy
Set your slippage tolerance and priority fee, then submit. Higher priority fees improve the odds of landing your transaction when the network is busy; wider slippage helps fills but risks a worse price.
Set your exits
Immediately set take-profit and stop-loss levels so your exits are planned, not emotional. See stop-loss and take-profit for where to place them.
How to evaluate a token
Before risking capital, look at a handful of on-chain signals rather than the hype:
- Liquidity: is there enough in the pool to exit without huge slippage?
- Holder concentration: do a few wallets hold most of the supply?
- Mint & freeze authority: can the team mint more or freeze your tokens?
- Age and volume: brand-new tokens with thin volume are the riskiest
- Can you actually sell? Honeypots let you buy but block selling
Position sizing
The most common way beginners blow up is oversizing. Pick a small, fixed amount per trade that you can lose without stress, and keep any single memecoin a small fraction of your total. Spreading the same money across ten coins does not make it safe, correlated memecoins can fall together.
Understanding what a trade costs
A trade is not just the platform fee. On Cheetah that fee is 0.5% per trade (0.4% for referred users, $0.95 USD minimum). On top of that you pay the Solana network fee, any priority fee you choose, and slippage/price impact from the pool. Full detail is in memecoin trading fees explained and on the fees page.
Practice first
If you are new, use a demo / paper-trading mode to run through the full workflow, find, evaluate, buy, set exits, sell, without risking real funds. It builds the habit of setting exits before you are emotionally attached to a position.
A sane first-trade routine
- Trade an amount you would not mind losing entirely
- Set stop-loss and take-profit the moment you buy
- Write down why you entered and what would make you exit
- Review afterward, what did the fees and slippage actually cost?
Risks & limitations
This is educational, not financial advice. Memecoins are extremely volatile and many lose all their value. Rug checks miss some scams, stop-losses can slip in thin liquidity, and fast execution still executes into chaotic markets. Nothing here promises a profit or eliminates risk.
